Dentures 101
May 17, 2022 5:02 amA full set of strong teeth help you speak, chew, and smile with confidence! Whether you have several missing teeth or an entire arch, dentures may be a good choice to restore your smile’s function and appearance, and help you get the nutrition you need.
What Are Dentures?
Traditional dentures are removable dental appliances that are custom-created to replace missing teeth. They are durable, long-lasting, and can dramatically improve your quality of life!
Types of Dentures
Full dentures can replace an entire arch of teeth by snapping onto implants or adhering to the gums with a strong dental adhesive. Partial dentures are used to replace missing teeth on the same arch with a framework of artificial teeth that are clipped onto surrounding natural teeth.
Benefits of Dentures
- Support your facial muscles and keep your cheeks from sagging
- Help you communicate clearly
- Are straightforward to clean
- Allow for healthy nutrition
Caring for Dentures
All dentures need to be cleaned daily. If you don’t care for your dentures, bacteria and food debris can build up and impair their function and harm your gums and remaining teeth.
Place a soft washcloth or hand towel on the bottom of your sink. This will act as a cushion in case your dentures are dropped during cleaning. Rinse your appliance with clean cool or lukewarm water and brush them with a soft denture brush and dish soap. A non-abrasive cleaner, like dish soap, is better than toothpaste when cleaning a dental appliance to prevent scratches.
Submerge your dentures in water when they aren’t in use. Additionally, regularly soak them in a denture cleaner.
Keep in mind that the placement of dentures can feel uncomfortable while you adjust. Let us know if the discomfort persists!
