What are common signs of oral cancer?

Oral cancer can appear in different areas of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat. Common signs include persistent sores or ulcers that don’t heal, red or white patches in the mouth, lumps or thickened areas, difficulty swallowing or moving the jaw, and unexplained bleeding or numbness. Early detection is key, so any unusual changes should be evaluated promptly by a dental professional.

Who is at risk for oral cancer?

Oral cancer can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the risk. Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing products, is a major contributor. Heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure on the lips, and a history of HPV infection can also increase risk. Being over the age of 40 and having a family history of cancer are additional factors as well. Even if a patient is considered “low risk,” it’s still important to get screened on a regular basis.

How do you prevent oral cancer?

While not all cases of oral cancer can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. Avoid tobacco products, limit alcohol consumption, and wear SPF to protect your lips from excessive sun exposure. Maintaining good oral hygiene and visiting our practice regularly for screenings allows early detection of abnormal changes. Vaccination against HPV may also lower risk. Early detection and lifestyle choices together support oral health and help catch potential problems before they progress.
